Cooperation on Sustainable Tourism for Economic Progress between PATA and Woljeongsa Temple

On May 19, 2018, Dr. Mario Hardy, CEO of the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) and Rev. Jeongnyeom, Abbott of Woljeongsa Temple in Gangwon Province, Korea, had a meeting in order to explore partnership opportunities in relation with tourism development for economic progress in Korea, including North Korea.
As a result, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between PATA and Woljeongsa Temple for future cooperation on sustainable tourism, particularly in PyeongChang County, Gangwon Province.
The meeting was arranged by Amb. Dho Young-shim, UN SDGs Advocate and Chairperson of the International Charity Foundation (ICF), with the participation of H.E. Edmund Bartlett, Minister of Tourism, Jamaica, Dr. Taleb Rifai, former UNWTO Secretary-General (2010-2017), and Dr. Francesco Frangialli, former UNWTO Secretary-General (1997-2009).

PATA Annual Summit 2018 May 17-20, 2018 – Gangneung, Rep. of Korea

The Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) had its Annual Summit 2018 in the Olympic city of Gangneung, Korea, on May 17-20, 2018, and was culminated by a global Conference on “Building Bridges, Connecting People”, how collaboration creates opportunities” (May 18). Amb. Dho Young-shim, UN SDGs Advocate and Chairperson of the International Charity Foundation (ICF), panelist of the first session of the Conference “Connecting Communities: Harmonising Local Interests with Global Sustainability in Tourism Development”.
PATA Annual was successfully hosted by the Korea Tourism Organization and Gangwon Province, with the strong and active support of Amb. Dho Young-shim, who has been instrumental in securing the presence of prominent speakers and thought leaders, including: H.E. Ban Ki-moon, former UN Secretary-General, Dr. Taleb Rifai, Former UNWTO Secretary-General (2010-2017), and Dr. Francesco Frangialli Former UNWTO Secretary-General.
On May 19, Amb. Dho was formerly appointed Special PATA Advisor by Dr Mario Hardy, CEO of PATA.

High-level meeting with Samsung at Samsung Digital Museum - Suwon, Korea

On May 17th, Amb. Dho Young-shim, UN SDGs Advocate and Chairperson of the International Charity Foundation (ICF) organized a high-level meeting between Samsung and a foreign delegation composed of H.E. Edmund Bartlett, Minister of Tourism, Jamaica, H.E. Wylbur Simuusa Ambassador or Zambia to the Republic of Korea, and Dr. Francesco Frangialli, Former Secretary-General of the World tourism Organization (UNWTO).
The meeting took place at Samsung Innovation Museum and was focused on Public-Private Partnership, Innovation and Smart technologies for Sustainable Tourism Development.

9th Asian Leadership Conference in Seoul, Korea
Panel on “Tourism: New Growth Engine for Sustainable Development”

The 9th Asian Leadership Forum was hosted in Seoul by top Korean newspaper Chosun Ilbo, on May 16-17, 2018, under the theme “Globalization in Crisis: Navigating the World with New Opportunities”.
On May 16th, Amb. Dho Young-shim, UN SDGs Advocate and Chairperson of the International Charity Foundation (ICF), moderated the panel on “Tourism: New Growth Engine for Sustainable Development”, within the framework of the session “Opportunity for Sustainable Growth”.
Panelists included H.E. Sheikha Mai bint Mohammed Al-Khalifa, President of the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities, H.E. Dr. Taleb Rifai, former Secretary-General of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), H.E. Edmund Bartlett, Minister of Tourism, Jamaica, H.E. José Manuel Soria, former Minister of Tourism, Spain, and Dr. Mario Hardy, Chief Executive Officer of the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA).

“Education Above All” Foundation marks milestone towards enrolling 10 million out of school children
April 27, 2018

On April 27, 2018 at the New York City Library, United States, the Education Above All (EAA) Foundation and its partners brought together development and education leaders to mark a major milestone – securing the final commitments needed to enroll 10 million children out of school and marginalized in quality basic education.
Her Highness Sheikha Moza Bint Nasser of Qatar, UN SDGs Advocate, and Founder and Chair of the EAA Foundation, announced that those 10 million children, living in the most dreadful environments around the world, would be enrolled and educated in accordance with EAA’s commitments in 2012, through the Educate A Child (EAC) programme.
​Amb. Dho Young-shim, UN SDGs Advocate and Chairperson of UNWTO ST-EP Foundation, attended this event and took this opportunity to promote the UN SDGs Ball, a awareness-raising and educational initiative led by Prime Minister of Norway Erna Solberg, co-Chair of the UN SDGs Advocacy Group.

Promoting the UN SDGs Ball Initiative within the U.N. Family, New-York – USA
April 26, 2018

On behalf of the co-Chair of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) Advocacy Group, H.E. Ms. Erna Solberg, Prime Minister of Norway, Amb. Dho Young-shim, UN SDGs Advocate and Chairperson of the ST-EP Foundation, promoted the UN SDGs Ball initiative during her mission in New-York on April 25 to 29, 2018.
This initiative is part of a communication campaign spearheaded by UN SDGs Advocate Erna Solberg, aimed at raising awareness of the SDGs using a very universal and popular educational tool: UN SDG branded footballs.
Amb. Dho took the opportunity to involve high-level UN representatives in NY, such as Ms. Michelle Gyles-McDonnough (Jamaica), Director of the Sustainable Development Unit, Executive Office of the Secretary-General at the United Nations.

Prof. Sachs’ Initiative to Raise Donations from Global Billionaires
April 26, 2018

On the occasion of her mission in New-York, Amb. Dho Young-shim, UN SDGs Advocate and Chairperson of the International Chairty Foundation (ICF) had a meeting with Prof. Jeffrey Sachs, UN SDGs Advocate and Director of the Earth Institute, on April 26, 2018.
Together, they evoked ways of accelerating progress towards the achievement of universal prosperity, and Prof. Sachs’ initiative to encourage billionaires of the world to donate a percentage of their assets as a contribution to global development. Amb. Dho expressed her willingness to cooperate on this project.

Promoting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through Sports and the SDGs Ball

On April 1st, 2018, the International Charity Foundation supported a soccer event for multicultural kids, aimed at promoting the Sustainable Development Goals through sports, in cooperation with Hope Kids organization.
Participating children had a chance to be familiarized with the SDGs and their values of share prosperity, social inclusiveness and environmental sustainability though the special balls that have been designed for that purpose.

Former UNESCO Director-General attends a Special Program at Woljeongsa Temple in PyeongChang, Korea

Dr. Irina Bokova, former director-general of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), delegation attended a special program at Woljeongsa Buddhist temple, hosted by Rev. Jeongnyeom, the Abbot of the temple. The program was arranged by Amb. Dho Young-shim, UN SDGs Advocate and Chairperson of the International Charity Foundation.
In March 2018, Dr. Bokova joined Kyung Hee University in Seoul as a chair-professor and head of its arts and humanities faculty. As a chair-professor and honorary chancellor of Humanitas College, she will be giving regular lectures to students and participating in seminars and forums with a focus on a variety of global development and civic issues

Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Walks Namsan Park, Seoul - Korea
March 25, 2018

The International Charity Foundation (ICF) hosted its first SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) Walks, in order to raise awareness of the SDGs in the context of sports and outdoor leisure, and inspire action through the message “Leaving No One Behind”.
Participants of this event included ​Amb. Dho Young-shim, UN SDGs Advocate and Chairperson of ICF, and members of Seoul-based international group Millennium Hikers, fostering positive social, environmental and economic impacts of hiking on destinations, and sharing sustainable, intercultural hiking experiences between local hosts and their guests.
This first SDGs Walks took place in Namsan Park, located in the geographic center of Seoul, on March 25, 2018.

Promoting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through Sports and the SDGs Ball

On March 18, 2018, Amb. Dho Young-shim, UN SDGs Advocate and Chairperson of the International Charity Foundation (ICF), attended the closing ceremony of PyeongChang 2018, or the Winter XXIII Olympics and XII Paralympics in Korea.
During the ceremony, Amb. Dho met Mr. Andrew Parsons, 3rd President of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) who praised ICF for having invited 100 soldiers from the United States Army Garrison (USAG) in Yongsan, Korea, to attend competitions during the Olympics and Paralympics, within the framework of the USAG’s BOSS – Better Opportunity for Single Soldier program. This project was implemented in partnership with the government Gangwon Province, host of PyeongChang 2018.

PyeongChang 2018 Closing Ceremony- Meeting with Korean Ministry of Tourism and Gambian OC

Amb. Dho Young-shim, Chairperson of UNWTO ST-EP Foundation and UN SDGs Advocate attended the closing ceremony of the XXIII Winter Olympics Games, or PyeongChang 2018, on February 25, 2018.
On that occasion, she had a meeting with Mrs. Beatrice Allen, Member of the National Olympic Committee of Gambia, who was a local partner of the UNWTO ST-EP Foundation for the establishment of two UN SDGs (formerly MDGs) Thank You Small Libraries (TYSL) in Gambia in December 2011, in the Olympafrica Centre and in the Olympic House.

Mrs. Allen was introduced by Amb. Dho to H.E. Mr. Do Jongwhan, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism of the Rep. of Korea, and expressed her gratitude for the two UN SDGs while requesting him for further support through providing more books to the TYSL in order to ensure their sustainability.

Raising awareness on SDGs during 2018 PyeongChang with Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden 
March 15, 2018

During the 2018 Winter Paralympics in PyeonChang, Korea, Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden, Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Advocate, joined hands with Amb. Dho Young-shim, Chairperson of UNWTO ST-EP Foundation and UN SDGs Advocate in raising global awareness of the SDGs through sports.
Together with Former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon, they promoted the UN SDGs Ball, as part of a promotion campaign led by Prime Minister of Norway Erna Solberg, co-Chair of the UN SDGs Advocacy Group.
Mr. Choi Moon Soon, Governor of Gangwon Province, the host of the XIII Olympic and XII Paralympic Winter Games, expressed his support by offering the two mascot plush dolls of the games.

PyeongChang 2018 - Garrison Commander of USAG shows appreciation to ICF - Olympics Seoul, Korea

On March 12, 2018, Amb. Dho Young-shim, Chairperson of the International Charity Foundation – ICF and UN SDGs Advocate, had a meeting at the United States Army Garrison (USAG) Yongsan, with Colonel J. Scott Peterson, Garrison Commander, together with Mr. Yoo, ICF Board Member.
Within the framework of its activities, ICF partnered with the Government of Gangwon Province and USAG’s BOSS – Better Opportunity for Single Soldier - program to invite 100 USAG soldiers to attend the 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in PyeongChang.
Col. Peterson hosed the meeting to express his thanks to ICF, and its endeavor to promote friendly and sustainable relationship between the US and Korea.

As she was in PyeongChang to cheer the Norwegian athletes at the XXII Paralympics, H.R.H. Princess Märtha Louise of Norway and her delegation attended a special program at Woljeongsa Buddhist temple, together Amb. Dho Young-shim, Chairperson of UNWTO ST-EP Foundation and UN SDGs Advocate, and Mr. Choi Moon Soon, Governor of Gangwon Province, host of 2018 PyeongChang. This event was an opportunity for the participants to praise the resilience of all paralympiansn and how sports help them overcome their life challenges.
As Woljeongsa, head temple of Jogye Buddhist Order, is hosting temple stays Princess Märtha expressed her deep interest in cultural and spiritual tourism in Korea.

Promoting SDGs and Education to high-level officials during 2018 PyeongChang

During the opening ceremony of the 2018 Paralympic Winter Games in PyeongChang on March 9, Amb. Dho Young-shim, Chairperson of UNWTO ST-EP Foundation and UN SDGs Advocate, met Mr. José Ramón Lete, President of the Spanish National Sports Council (Consejo Superior de Deportes, CSD). CSD is the government organization under the the Ministry of the Presidency, in charge of directing the development of sport at national level.
As a continuation, Amb. Dho organized a meeting with Mr. Lete and H.E. Mr. Gonzalo Ortiz Díez-Tortosa, Ambassador of Spain to the Republic of Korean, to discuss about promoting SDGs leardership through sports and education, as well as a project of establishing a The “Public-Private Leadership Academy” in Madrid, Spain. This PPL Academy, , which would offer customized education, training, capacity-building, and awareness-raising programs to executive officers from public and private organizations, with a focus on leadership and governance as tools for global sustainable development.

UN SDGs Luncheon hosted by Woljeongsa Temple PyeongChang – South Korea
February 18, 2018

Rev. Jeongnyeom, Abbot of Woljeongsa  Buddhist Temple, hosted a luncheon on Feb. 18, 2018 in honor of H.E. Mrs. Erna Solberg, Prime Minister of Norway and Co-Chair of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) Advocacy Group.
The luncheon was also attended by the 8th United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, Amb. Dho Young-shim, Chairperson of UNWTO ST-EP Foundation and UN SDGs Advocate, and members of the Norwegian delegation.
Founded in 643, Woljeongsa is located inside Odaesan National Park in Pyeongchang County, host of the XXIII Olympic Winter Games and the XII Paralympic Winter Games. The head temple of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism hosts temple stays.

UN SDGs Advocates hold a Ceremony for 100 Children at a Primary School in PyeongChang – South Korea

On Feb. 16, 2018, H.E. Mrs. Erna Solberg, Prime Minister of Norway and Co-Chair of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) Advocacy Group, together with Amb. Dho Young-Shim, Chairperson of UNWTO ST-EP Foundation and UN SDGs Advocate, led a ceremony at the Musan Community Children’s Center Primary School in PyeongChang, South Korea.
The ceremony was attended by 100 school children and aimed at bringing together the messages of the Olympic spirit, the UN SDGs, and the importance of quality education for all, using a very universal and popular communication tool: UN SDG branded footballs. PM Solberg talked to them about individual and collective responsibilities to build a more peaceful and equal world by the year 2030.
Other participants of the ceremony included Mr. Choi Moon Soon, Governor of Gangwon Province, host of the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympics and Paralympics, Ms. Kristin Kloster Aasen, International Olympic Committee Representative to Norway and Ms. Soohyun Kim, Head of Office, UNICEF Seoul Office.

Norwegian Prime Minister promotes UN SDGs & Sports during High-level meeting with Korean President–
February 15, 2018

Korean President Moon Jae-in held a meeting in Seoul with Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg on Feb. 15, 2018 on the occasion of her visit to South Korea for the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, and discussed ways to bolster cooperation on the Olympic Games and state of affairs on the Korean Peninsula.

During the meeting, Norwegian PM Solberg, Co-Chair of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Advocacy Group, highlighted how sports and education were crucial to promote the achievement of the UN’s 2030 Development Agenda and the 17 UN SDGs. She introduced a very efficient awareness-raising tool to President Moon: the SDGs branded football.

High-Level Meeting at the Slovenia House - PyeongChang 2018, South Korea

After a hiatus of eight years, the Slovenia House came back as a meeting place for athletes and a promotion center for Slovenian sports, tourism and business events at PyeongChang 2018, the XXIII Winter Olympic Games hosted by South Korea.
On Feb. 12, 2018, Amb. Dho Young-shim, Chairperson of UNWTO ST-EP Foundation and UN SDGs Advocate had a high-level meeting at the Slovenia House with Ms. Eva Štravs Podlogar, State Secretary at the Ministry of Economic Development and Technology, and Former Director-General of the Tourism and Internationalization Directorate.
Amb. Dho congratulated State Secretary Štravs Podlogar for the newly-inaugurated Slovenia House and discussed opportunities for promoting the relation between Sports, the UN Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs), and Tourism.

Kyung Hee University Awards an Honorary Doctorate Degree to Former Director-General of UNESCO - Seou

Amb. Dho Young-shim, Chairperson of UNWTO ST-EP Foundation and UN SDGs Advocate attended the ceremony hosted by Yonsei University in Seoul to award an Honorary Doctorate Degree in Peace Studies to Ms. Irina Bokova, Former Director-General of the UNESCO, United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization.
During the ceremony that took place on Feb. 13, 2018, Ms. Bokova was also named Honorary Dean of Humanities by Dr. Inwon Choue, President of Kyung Hee University.
On Feb. 8, 2018, she was a panelist of the Global Engagement & Empowerment Forum on Sustainable Development (GEEF) organized by the Institute for Global Engagement and Empowerment (IGEE) and the Ban Ki-moon Centre for Global Citizens at Yonsei University.

UN SDGs Advocates attend the Global Engagement & Empowerment Forum on Sustainable Development 2018

The inaugural Global Engagement & Empowerment Forum on Sustainable Development (GEEF) was hosted by the Institute for Global Engagement and Empowerment (IGEE) and the Ban Ki-moon Centre for Global Citizens, at Yonsei University in Seoul, South Korea, on Feb. 7 & 8, 2018.
Under the theme “Putting People and Planet at the Center”, prominent figures including UN Secretary-General António Guterres, Former UN SG Ban Ki-moon, and Korean Prime Minister Lee Nak-yeon participated as speakers to provide insights on the 2030 Development Agenda and best practices towards achieving the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by over 190 world leaders in 2015.
On Feb. 8, 2018, Amb. Dho Young-shim, Chairperson of UNWTO ST-EP Foundation and UN SDGs Advocate attended the First plenary session of the Forum titled “Sport and Partnerships for Sustainable Development and Peace”.

Amb. Dho Young-shim, Chairperson of UNWTO ST-EP Foundation and UN SDGs Advocate, attended the Forum and took this opportunity to have a meeting with Prime Minister Solberg on Jan. 24, 2018, in preparation of the upcoming visit of a Norwegian delegation led by PM Solberg to the Republic of Korea, during the XXIII Olympic Winter Games, commonly known as PyeongChang 2018.

High Level Meeting with Former Spanish Prime Minister Aznar and is spouse, Former Mayor of Madrid, S

On Jan. 19, 2018, Amb. Dho Young-shim, Chairperson of UNWTO ST-EP Foundation and UN SDGs Advocate, had a high-level meeting with Mr. José María Aznar, 160th Prime Minister of Spain (1996-2004), and his spouse Ms. Ana Botella, the first female mayor of Madrid (2011-2015).

The meeting took place at Mr. Aznar’s office in Madrid, in preparation of the upcoming 9th Asian Leadership Conference (ALC), an annual international conference hosted in Seoul, South Korea, by leading Korean daily newspaper Chosun Ilbo, characterized by its numerous prominent speakers.

Mr. Aznar evoked the Instituto Atlántico de Gobierno (IADG), a center of higher university education "of excellence" he has created to teach a Master's Degree in Leadership, Government and Public Management.

Presentation on PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympics during FITUR, Madrid, Spain

Amb. Dho Young-shim, Chairperson of UNWTO ST-EP Foundation and UN SDGs Advocate attended the 2018 edition of the international Tourism Trade Fair FITUR, which took place on Jan. 17 to 21, in Madrid, Spain.

As South Korea will host the 2018 Winter Olympics, officially known as the XXIII Olympic Winter Games and commonly known as PyeongChang 2018, Amb. Dho encouraged the audience to actively support this milestone event, which will promote a spirit of peace and unity.

She also invited them to visit the booth of South Korea in FITUR, and to enjoy the vibrant and diverse Korean culture, mixing tradition and modernity.

The ST-EP Foundation pays tribute to outgoing UNWTO SG Taleb Rifai – Madrid, Spain

On Jan. 16, 2018 in Madrid, a reception was hosted in Madrid by Ambassadors from Middle-East countries to the Kingdom of Spain, in honor of outgoing UNWTO Secretary-General Taleb Rifai.
Amb. Dho Young-shim, Chairperson of the UNWTO Foundation and UN SDGs Advocate, took this opportunity to offer a book prepared by the ST-EP Foundation not only as a tribute to Dr. Rifai but also a legacy to the future generations.

Bound with traditional Korean techniques, and illustrated by French artist Jean Berthelot-Kleck, the book is a collection of keynote speeches delivered by Dr. Rifai during the period 2010-2017, with the purpose to provide the youth with a valuable source of knowledge and inspiration, and to encourage them to play an active role in the the world tourism community, not only as responsible travelers but also as committed professionals.
